Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome

Anyone who had or is experiencing Temporomandibular (TMJ) Syndrome knows how painful and uncomfortable it can be. This joint is one of the most active joints in the body. It opens and closes up to 2000 times a day. It is the joint formed by the articulation of the mandible (jaw) and the temporal bone. This area is innervated by the trigeminal nerve (Cranial Nerve V). The principal muscles used in opening the mouth are the external pterygoids and in closing the mouth are the internal pterygoids, the masseter and the temporalis. TMJ is experienced as pain in and around the ear, tenderness of the jaw muscles, tooth sensitivity and headaches. There may be a popping noise or clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth. The opening of the mouth may be limited or abnormal. There can be unilateral chronic pain with chewing or jaw clenching. There may be a swelling and tenderness on the affected side of the face. TMJ can be caused by trauma to the mouth but is often associated with stress.

That is the bad news. The good news is that it can frequently be corrected with Acupuncture and CranioSacral Therapies. With Acupuncture, local and distal points along the Gall Bladder, Small Intestine and San Jiao channels are particularly useful in alleviating the TMJ pain and discomfort. Consideration should also be given to points on the Stomach and Large Intestine. All of these channels of energy run through the face. As for CranioSacral Therapy, attention should be given to releasing not only the jaw but the hips as well. We have found the combination of Acupuncture and CranioSacral Therapy gives the fastest and longest lasting results.

It has been our experience that with acute situations, two or three sessions may eliminate the discomfort. If the situation is of a more chronic nature, it may take longer to achieve the desired results.
