Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful disorder of the wrist and hand. It is caused by the compression, entrapment or irritation of the median nerve between the carpal ligament and other structures in the carpal tunnel. It is often caused by cumulative trauma to the wrist and is a repetitive stress injury. Any repetitive motion of the hand can create the problem. Actions such as typing, playing musical instruments, sports or construction can cause the syndrome.

The onset is usually gradual. The median nerve innervates the palm and the radial side (thumb side) of the hand i.e. the first three fingers and the radial side of the fourth finger. When this nerve is compromised it may cause some weakness or pain. It can be felt as an aching, burning or tingling. As the condition progresses, the pain can become sharp and piercing and can become debilitating. These symptoms can radiate to the forearm, shoulder joint and possibly to the neck. The pain can be constant or intermittent. The pain does seem to be worse at night. In the morning, there tends to be stiffness in the wrist and hand. If the condition is not addressed it can progress and can cause atrophy of muscles in the hand. It can also result in permanent damage to the hand and median nerve. Two simple tests, the Phalen’s test or the Tinel’s test, can be performed to help diagnose the condition.

Acupuncture can be successful in treating this syndrome. The treatment is focused on freeing the qi (energy) and blood stagnation in the acupuncture channels. For this condition, the stagnation is generally found in the Pericardium channel. This channel approximates the path of the median nerve. In addition to acupuncture, natural herbs may be suggested to help reduce the inflammation of the nerve.
